The importance of Good Photography

March 24, 2015

Our clients are often impressed by a website, or a marketing piece, that is standard in design. What is compelling them to show it to us is usually the stellar photography, even though they're not aware of it.

Amazing photography allows us to feel an emotional connection that far exceeds the ability of words. A good photo is worth more than 1,000 words or clever taglines. I should also mention that good photography is not cheap.

Most clients are shocked to discover the actual cost of using a professional photographer. The concept of photography as an art isn’t easily accepted. With photography being so easy to take on an iPhone, people have become self-professed photographers, but they are not. The photos may work for Instagram, but they aren’t going to work for your website and much less for your printed materials.

If you want to impress with your photography you have to be prepared to spend money on a quality photographer. Photography relies heavily on various things, the ability to capture the right angles, to use the natural light available, to light subjects well, to work with living subjects, and ultimately the art of post production. Enhancing colors, fixing minor cosmetic issues, sometimes even major issues, and improving the overall composition of an image can add tremendous value to the photography.

Most good images that evoke the right feelings don’t happen from one click of the button, sometimes not even 100. A lot of the times the perfect photo is a composite of various images. Many times we have fabricated images to achieve our goals. In certain cases, we have spliced body parts of models to create the perfect shot, in other compositions we have stitched together various images of a home to capture it in all of its glory. Professional photography requires more than just clicking a button, or even having a nice camera. It requires a high level of expertise and the ability to complete post-production work on the images.
